The Difference Between a Cleaning and a Deep Cleaning

December 9, 2025

Not all dental cleanings are the same. If your dentist recommends a deep cleaning instead of a regular one, here’s what that means — and why it matters.

Regular Cleaning (Prophylaxis)

This is the standard cleaning you get every six months if your gums are healthy. It includes:

  • Removing plaque and tartar above the gumline
  • Polishing teeth and flossing
  • Checking for cavities or early gum issues

Best for: Preventive care and maintenance when there’s no gum disease.

Deep Cleaning (Scaling & Root Planing)

A deep cleaning is a treatment for gum disease, especially when bacteria and tartar have built up below the gumline. It includes:

  • Scaling: Cleaning under the gums
  • Root planing: Smoothing root surfaces to help gums heal
  • May require local anesthesia and multiple visits
  • Best for: Treating bleeding gums, deep pockets, gum recession, or bone loss.

Why It Matters

Ignoring early gum disease can lead to serious issues like tooth loss. A deep cleaning helps stop the damage and gives your gums a chance to heal.
