The Difference Between a Cleaning and a Deep Cleaning
Not all dental cleanings are the same. If your dentist recommends a deep cleaning instead of a regular one, here’s what that means — and why it matters.
Regular Cleaning (Prophylaxis)
This is the standard cleaning you get every six months if your gums are healthy. It includes:
- Removing plaque and tartar above the gumline
- Polishing teeth and flossing
- Checking for cavities or early gum issues
Best for: Preventive care and maintenance when there’s no gum disease.
Deep Cleaning (Scaling & Root Planing)
A deep cleaning is a treatment for gum disease, especially when bacteria and tartar have built up below the gumline. It includes:
- Scaling: Cleaning under the gums
- Root planing: Smoothing root surfaces to help gums heal
- May require local anesthesia and multiple visits
- Best for: Treating bleeding gums, deep pockets, gum recession, or bone loss.
Why It Matters
Ignoring early gum disease can lead to serious issues like tooth loss. A deep cleaning helps stop the damage and gives your gums a chance to heal.
